The homeless have become so ubiquitous that we no longer question the morality of a system that creates a situation where people live on the streets, and we accept it as the norm. Austerity cuts to vital mental health and drug and alcohol rehabilitation provision, welfare reforms such as the bedroom tax, cuts to housing benefit and benefit sanctions are all fuelling a homeless crisis.

Drawing on previous works in social practice on homelessness, this body of work is a visual representation on homeless people in order to consider their lives and experience through a series of portraits in which they hold a message written by themselves on a piece of cardboard.

These photographs were taken in Preston between February and March 2020.

By the influences of practitioners such as Anthony Luvera and Gillian Wearing, through a participatory approach and the medium of photography, this project aims to question the concept of poverty in our society, raising awareness of the homelessness issues by giving a voice to those who are no often listened, giving an insight into the challenges and realities faced by the most marginalised individuals in our society.

What would you write down?

Homelessness is a structural problem that is increased through the way that society is organized. It's a radical example of exclusion that should not exist in so-called advanced societies today.
